William H. Walton, PE, SE, Vice President, GEI Consultants, Inc., Chicago, IL
The excavation for the 80-floor Infinity Tower in Dubai, UAE was nearing completion when the supervision team noticed a slight movement and cracks in the diaphragm wall adjacent to the Dubai Marina. Management ordered an immediate evacuation of the site and nearly 100 workers escaped. The diaphragm wall crumbled within two minutes of cracks being noticed, and the excavation was completely flooded within four minutes on February 7, 2007.
Mr. Walton was the Principal Engineer responsible for the root cause failure analysis for the 22-meter- deep excavation retained by a slurry wall with earth anchors and corner bracing. He also led the remedial shoring designs to restore the excavation. The unique, twisting 1,000-foot-high tower has now been completed.
