Updates Guide to Current Regulations as of October 2023
In October 2023, the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Architects and the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors issued a new edition of the Professional Practice Guide, A Guide to the Practice of Architecture, Engineering, and Land Surveying in Massachusetts. This guide includes major updates reflecting changes in regulations since the last guide was published in 1995.
This Guide has been revised after many years to assist licensees and consumers in understanding the professional responsibilities of architects, professional engineers, and professional land surveyors, and to direct people to sources of information that can help answer questions arising in day-to-day practice of these professions. It is an important resource for design professionals, state and municipal officials, and the public. This guide reflects regulations that are current as of October 2023.
The Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL), an agency within the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, is responsible for oversight of 26 boards of registration, as well as the Office of Public Safety and Inspections and the Office of Private Occupational School Education. Collectively, DOL boards and offices license and regulate more than 500,000 individuals, businesses, and schools to engage in over 100 trades and professions in Massachusetts.
While we expect an official announcement about the new guide from the Division of Occupational Licensure, the guide has been posted on the webpages for both the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Architects and the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and is ready for use and distribution to design professionals, state and municipal officials, and the public
