Heavy civil construction in urban environments affects neighbors and existing adjacent structures or utilities. While noise, dust and access are often nuisance concerns, demolition, excavation, and dewatering can damage adjacent buildings and infrastructure. During design of the new structure, the Engineer of Record (EOR) typically identifies risks to adjacent structures and defines roles and responsibilities to further evaluate and manage those risks throughout construction. The EOR has the option to perform adjacent structure investigation during its design phase, or delegate some or all of it to Contractors. Up-front investigative work by the EOR may increase the up-front price and schedule to the Owner, but it can benefit the project by reducing unknowns that would otherwise be difficult for the Contractor to price. Delegating the investigation to the Contractor may result in even more substantial delays or cost increases. In this webinar, we will discuss the risks inherent to various types of adjacent construction activities and explore ways to evaluate, manage, and delegate the risks. Scott DiFiore is a Principal at SGH. Scott has a background in both structural and geotechnical engineering which he utilizes with his experience for designing, investigating, and rehabilitating a variety of structures.
