Featuring a rapid-fire format during which exhibiting vendors will explain and answer questions about the products and services they offer.
New Datums – What You Need to Know with Only Two Years to Go
Daniel J. Martin, NOAA/NOS/National Geodetic Survey
This session will provide updated information about the planned 2022 modernization of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) by replacing the US horizontal and vertical datums (NAD 83 and NAVD 88). Dan will discuss individual projects that contribute to the modernized NSRS including New Data Delivery System, SPCS2022, Grav-D, Modernized CORS, enhancements to OPUS, and GPSonBM.
Lidar for Surveyors
Dr. Ray Hintz, University of Maine
Lidar has been a recent option to the world of field solutions in surveying. During this session, Ray will examine the differences between static, airborne, and mobile Lidar, the importance of both GPS-IMU in the airplane or vehicle, hardware and software considerations, and classification of Lidar data sets and its synthesis with photogrammetric and/or ground survey products.
Panel Discussion – Locally Accessible Land Surveying Educational Options
Panelists include Tim Burch, National Society of Professional Surveyors, Liem Tran, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and A. Richard Vannozzi, University of Maine

Know When to Hold ‘em and Other Procedural Pitfalls – Part One

At the core of the land surveying profession is the boundary monument, and most boundary retracement decisions revolve around the choice to hold an existing monument, set a new monument, or choose between multiple existing monuments. This stand-alone session features nationally recognized Kris Kline presenting an in-depth discussion of principles that form the basis of this critical decision, including the rules of construction, sufficiency of research, and relevant common law for the analysis for several types of property corners.
Flood Resistant Design & Construction – 9th vs. 10th Edition Building Code
Sean Riley, Coastal Engineering Company, Inc.
The presentation will include a brief overview of the different Flood Zones and their Boundaries and the introduction of the Limit of Moderate Wave Action (LIMWA) Boundary. The 10th Edition of the Building Code, which will be adopted in 2020-2021, is expected to include new regulations regarding construction requirements for buildings sited within the LIMWA. Sean will review current 9th Edition Building Code Regulations with regards to Flood Resilient Design and the proposed 10th Edition revisions.

This stand-alone session advances Friday’s discussion by concentrating on adverse possession, prescriptive easements, and quasi easements as applicable in Massachusetts. This is a general overview of several different principles. Knowledge of these topics will help surveyors improve their research and location techniques (both office and field) so as to better serve the client in cases where disputes may arise
