Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Finding a Roadmap Forward

The BSCES Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Committee was founded to promote a culture within the civil engineering community that is more welcoming and more reflective of the population that we serve.  This first event of the DE&I Committee is intended to introduce members to the Committee’s proposed mission and to gather feedback as to what areas are of greatest priority to BSCES members and how they might be addressed.  Lisa Black, ASCE’s Director of Cultural Belonging and Social Ethos will start the discussion with a brief presentation on the challenges facing engineers from underrepresented communities and ASCE initiatives.  Then we will be breaking up into groups to develop recommendations of proposed DE&I Committee activities that address the themes of the DE&I mission statement:  

 

(1) Promoting a welcoming, inclusive culture

(2) Attracting underrepresented communities to engineering as a career

(3) Prioritizing equity and environmental justice in design
