Zoom Webinar
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Speaker:
Sena Kumarasena, PhD, PE
Principal Bridge Engineer, Reliance Engineers LLC
The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge is a local landmark structure in Boston carrying 10 lanes of traffic over the Charles River. Its structural form is born out of the numerous constraints of the heavily built-up project site and the functional requirements. The presentation will focus on these key design challenges and the innovative problem solving and design innovations implemented in addressing these design challenges.
Sena Kumarasena, PhD, PE served in multiple roles as lead design engineer, project engineer and deputy project manager during the design and construction phases of this project and was responsible for developing technical solutions to resolve and successfully address a number of the complexities during the design of this of this one-of-a-kind cable-stayed bridge. He was recognized as one of Engineering News-Record’s Newsmaker Award recipients for the year 2000 for his work on this project. Sena is now serving as the principal bridge engineer with Reliance Engineers LLC, a Massachusetts-based consulting engineering firm he co-founded in 2013. He brings over 30 years of broad-ranging industry experience in the planning, concept formulation, design development, condition evaluation, rehabilitation, and construction management of bridges of all types, especially on projects with high degree of technical and construction complexity. His experience includes both steel and concrete bridges and specialty bridges such as movable bridges, concrete segmental, through arch and deck arch, cable-supported, and truss bridges. He brings considerable expertise in risk evaluation and analysis and design against seismic and wind effects. He is a registered professional engineer in MA as well as in several other jurisdictions.
