In 2019, MassDOT took an aggressive approach to accelerate the rehabilitation and replacement of eight bridges carrying Interstate 90 in the towns of Southborough and Westborough, Massachusetts. Using a combination of Design-Build (DB) contracting and Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), MassDOT was able to complete the procurement, design, and construction of the aptly named Acceler-8 I-90 Bridge Replacement Project in less than two years. After a two-stage procurement process, MassDOT, assisted by CDR Maguire (owner’s engineer), selected the winning team led by J. F. White Contracting Co. (builder), with Gill Engineering Associates, Inc. as structural design lead and design manager, and Tetra Tech as civil and traffic design lead. This was the same award-winning trio who replaced 14 bridge superstructures on I-93, in Medford, MA, in 2011 known as the Fast-14. 

The base technical concept of the RFP contemplated the use of Prefabricated Bridge Units (PBUs), steel beams with precast concrete deck, as the primary structural element. Although this was the same construction method employed for Fast-14, early in the proposal stage the Acceler-8 team decided on a more innovative solution and proposed precast prestressed NEXT D beams instead. This presentation will discuss the design and construction of the Acceler-8 design-build project and contrast that with experiences on Fast-14.
