The Future City Competition is a project‐based learning experience where student teams, led by an educator and volunteer mentor, spend four months developing a virtual city (using SimCity), researching and designing a solution to a city wide issue (this year’s challenge—Public Spaces—asks students to include in their future city a distributed network of innovative, multi-use public spaces that serves the city’s diverse population), and building a scale model of their city using recycled material. This training will revolve around two key principles: user type – which ranges from experienced cyclists to people who are interested in bicycling but concerned for their safety – and the bicycle network. Please join us to hear Ms. Garner speak on how the Flint Water Study team at Virginia Tech uncovered the water quality issues in Flint. Emily Garner is currently a PhD student at Virginia Tech studying Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. She is a member of the Flint Water Study team led by Dr. Marc Edwards that worked with citizens of Flint, Michigan to identify unsafe levels of lead in their drinking water and advocate for a resolution. She will present about her team's journey to provide the citizens of Flint with scientific evidence to support their claims that their drinking water was unsafe for consumption. Learn more

Every spring, BSCES attends the Cambridge Science Festival. The founding collaborators are MIT, Harvard University, the City of Cambridge and the Museum of Science. BSCES is invited to attend the Science Carnival and Robot Zoo Event, which is an expo‐style event with almost 100 booths providing hands on activities and demonstrations for the public. MassDOT has indicated that individuals with NHI “Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures” training will be a preferred qualification for its upcoming RFP for on-call services for Ancillary Highway Structures. This two-day course provides training in the inspection and maintenance of ancillary structures, such as structural supports for highway signs, luminaries, and traffic signals. Learn more
