Modern traffic signal controllers are talking to everything that will listen using connected-vehicle Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) protocols that are becoming more prevalent in the US and around the world. With applications for intersection status monitoring, emergency vehicle-preemption, and transit signal prioritization, this technology has great potential to improve safety for all modes of travel, lower emergency response times, and reduce our environmental impact.
Matt Picanso and Angela Dempsey live on the edge of traffic technology innovation and played integral parts in the rollout of MassDOT's 38 Advanced Traffic Controller (ATC) cabinets along the Route 9 corridor from Shrewsbury to Wellesley. Each cabinet includes advanced V2X technology, allowing it to communicate safety information to travelers and adjust the intersection's operation to adapt to changing conditions on the roadway or the presence of emergency vehicles. Following the presentation and lunch at District 3, we will visit a nearby ATC traffic signal cabinet to see connected-vehicle technology in action.
Join us on May 17 at the MassDOT District 3 Headquarters where we'll learn what makes V2X communication possible, how it is opening doors to improved data-driven signal design, and what role AI will play in traffic operations of the future. Space is limited, so sign up today!
