Join NYSAPLS, Inc. and local expert Michael Webb, LS, for this fun day out (and in)! This program will include a morning of classroom learning, followed by an afternoon outdoors (rain or shine).

The first 4 hours of the workshop will include a presentation in a traditional classroom setting, where attendees will learn about the various tree species found in New York State including identification, physiology, taxonomy and uses and characteristics of wood.

In the afternoon the class will head outdoors, where the program will be dedicated to field identification of tree species found in the general area of the workshop location. Attendees will look at site, growing characteristics, limb shape, crown shape, bark color, bark texture, flowering and seed generation and various ways to identify tree species. A half hour at the end of the course will be reserved for a twenty question quiz on tree identification. If time allows, there will be a demonstration on how to differentiate between decayed conifer and deciduous stump material.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:
  1. Identify common tree species of NY by leaf and crown shape, bark, buds (if available) and wood characteristics.
  2. Know of the available resources for identifying various tree species, including ornamental trees.
  3. Know how to mark line, corner and witness trees for future identification.
  4. Know how to conduct a test of decayed stump wood to identify whether it is deciduous or conifer.
